Aldi Grand Opening in New Lenox

Construction on the new Aldi store on Rt. 30 on the east side of New Lenox has finished and the store is open for business today. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and the store is packed with customers, but  all of the checkout stations are manned and shoppers can get through quickly. There are quite a few Aldi employees in the aisles to help customers locate items.

If you haven't shopped at an Aldi store before, you may like to know:

1. Shopping carts are chained together, insert a quarter into the coin slot on the cart to rent one for your visit. When you return your cart to the corral, insert the end of the chain into the appropriate opening on your cart, and you will get your quarter back. (Today you won't need a quarter as staff are providing carts to customers.)

2.  Bring your own bags, or you may purchase them at the checkout. Bags are in bins below conveyor belts.

3.  Aldi doesn't take coupons, but they keep prices consistently lower than conventional supermarkets by providing their own store brands. Quality of these brands is overall quite good--if you ever have a problem, return it and you will receive replacement product and your money back.

Aldi at New Lenox is laid out in the company's new design, said the helpful young man wearing an Aldi I.D. badge this morning. Staff were all over the store, assisting customers in finding things, since the new store is much larger than other area Aldis. Aisles are longer, and it takes a little looking around to locate products, if you are familiar with placement in the older stores. The soaring ceiling with exposed metalwork is similar to many warehouse designed stores. There are more windows at this store, too, creating a feeling that the building is flooded in natural light.

And, of course, the fundamental of the store is the same: low prices. Here are a few samples:
     • Skim milk gallon $1.99
     • Celery .49
     • Carrots 2# .99
     • Taco seasoning mix envelope .39
     • Mild Salsa 24 oz. $1.79
     • Split top wheat bread 20 oz. loaf .99
     • Eggs dozen .99
Seasonal items are displayed, including holiday baking products AND toys. I'm long past childhood, but I was tempted to get the Discovery Kids 49-key electronic keyboard for just $14.99!

Frustration
Our DSL connection has been spotty this week, causing me frustration. It seems to work fine until I want to post something! So, my "cherry picks" of the best deals this week at grocery/drug stores are appearing later than I'd like. Saturday is the last day for some of the advertised specials I've listed below, and sometimes stores are out of sale items by the last day of the ad. I have had the experience of going to Walgreen's on a Saturday and finding empty shelves for the items I really wanted to buy, BUT Walgreen's is very good about issuing rain checks to use later for purchasing the items at this week's sale price. Be sure and ask for rain checks at the checkout counter there.

Trends
I wait until the last minute before Halloween to purchase trick-or-treat candy, since candy takes on magical properties in our house and--POUF--disappears! The time to buy has arrived and the average bag of candy is costing about $2.50. Walgreen's and CVS have slightly better prices, and there have been coupons in the newspaper ad inserts which can bring the cost down. Halloween is Monday, October 31, so buy that candy now, if you dare!

Drying Grasses for Decorations.

Don't you love the colors of fall, the crimson and gold of leaves, and the tan and brown of drying crops and grasses? Autumn is my favorite time of year, and I like to bring some of that beauty indoors. Here is an easy project so you can do that, too.

1. Gather material. I used some ornamental grass from our garden. You can also use grasses or weeds that grow wild--just ask for permission from property owners and make sure the plants haven't been sprayed with weedkillers. Cut the grasses a little longer than what you want for your arrangement.

2. Spray plumes, flowers, and anything that might shed, with a fixative. I use inexpensive hair spray, which works well.

3. Separate stems and let hairspray dry.

4.  Loosely bind together a few stems with rubber bands. Make sure there is room for air to circulate around each stem. Hang stems upside down to dry. Drying time depends on what material you are using. The grasses I used here took a couple of weeks. (Bundles of stems make attractive decorations while drying, too. You might like to add a raffia or ribbon bow over the rubber band.)

 5. Trim the dried stems and arrange. If you have just a few stems, you can space them out to look fuller by anchoring the stems in styrofoam inside your container. Enjoy!

Cherry Picks

Trends this week:
Several stores have specials on roasts or stews, which are perfect for using in a slow cooker for a simple autumn meal. It's an easy way to cook a meal while you do something else!

Nearly every store has pasta and sauce on sale, so that's an inexpensive second meal or a way to stock your cupboards, or to buy something to share with a Food Pantry.

On a related note, my husband and I are participating in the CROP Hunger Walk October 16 in Manhattan, Illinois. If you would like to make a monetary donaion or participate in the Manhattan (or other area) CROP Hunger Walk to help raise money to fight hunger locally and around the world, go to:

Yum, salsa...
I spent some time in our garden today, picking tomatoes, green onions and a little of the second crop of cilantro. I chopped all of those, added the juice of a fresh lime, a little salt, and pressed some garlic into the mixture and now we have a sort of pico de gallo. Now, we need some tortilla chips! I'll pick some up when I next head to the store, and in the meantime, you can see what are the best of the grocery sale items in the ads by looking through my "cherry picks" below.

Cherry Picks - Friday, Sept. 23, 2011

Trends this week: It seems like this is a good week to buy an inexpensive bottle of olive oil (on sale around $3.99 at Berkot's, Jewel-Osco, Walt's) to use in mixing up a salad dressing, making pesto with fresh basil (lovely over spaghetti squash, if you want to keep the carbs down), or cooking.

Toss the olive oil with 1" chunks of potatoes (leave the skin on), thickly sliced carrots, and yellow onions each cut into 8 wedges. Sprinkle a little garlic powder, salt and pepper on vegetables, and roast at 500 degrees F in an oiled metal jelly pan for 20-25 minutes, turning once, until the vegetables are done. So yummy, and the kitchen will smell divine!
